Fujian Tulou is a unique rammed earth building, rectangular or circular in configuration, constructed between the 15th and 20th centuries in south-west of Fujian province. Its structure reminiscent of an enclosed castle, Tulou has fortified mud walls for insulation and defence, and can be built up to five stories high housing up to eight hundred people of three to four generations.
The relationship of the unique massive buildings to their landscape embodies both Feng Shui principles and ideas of landscape beauty and harmony. Hence, 46 Fujian Tulou sites including Chuxi tulou cluster have been inscribed in July 2008 by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, as exceptional examples of a building tradition and function exemplifying a particular type of communal living and defensive organization, and, in terms of their harmonious relationship with their environment.
With relentless passion to see the world through camera lens, Laurence set off for Fujian to capture the beauty and austerity of Tulou, revealing the ancient art and wisdom to inspire the contemporaries. Please visit Laurence Lai Gallery for the fabulous latest works of Fujian Tulou.
